Whales are majestic creatures, famed for their high intelligence and attractive singing. For centuries, humans have exploited whales for oil and meat. Due to this hunting, whales are close to extinction and the intercontinental community has actually banned whale angling. However, Japan defies the ban on whale angling.
The detrimental impact humans have had on whales stems from the commercial hunting for meat and perfume active ingredients. More than 2 million whales were killed in the early 20th century. By the middle of the 20th century, whales were seriously endangered and numbers were depleted. In 1986 the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling, but Japan continues to ignore this ban. When the ban was in place, Japan continued to hunt whales utilizing a loophole that supplies for medical research. The meat from these hunts is sold in shops and restaurants. Though Japan is skirting the rules, and it is frowned upon by the IWC, the IWC still enables it.
Sea Shepherd is an business that says Japan is in violation of the IWC rules on all commercial whaling. They point out that the Oriental public does not support commercial whale hunting, but all the major political parties do. Whale meat supposedly caught for “research functions” ends up in the well known Tsukiji fish market, Marine Shepherd points out. They examine this embezzlement of whale meat on a regular basis and try to protect against whaling in the high oceans as it is taking place.
The unlawful whale hunts have actually not stopped. More wants to be done to eliminate whaling before the species is totally lessened. Marine Shepherd is devoted to this fight. Visit Sea Shepherd to study more.
what might happen to the rest of the ecosystem if humpback whales become extinct? i really really really really need this quick and the best answer possible!! ill choose best answer and give you points!
To put it simply, there would be a sudden boom in the plankton and shrimp populations that would throw the whole ecosystem out of whack.
Krill would take over, and sharks would go hungry. Then it goes on from there.
So I traveled back to the 1980′s and acquired a pair of healthy humpback whales.? Now, how do I get back to the 23rd century?
First you need a Klingon Warbird. You have to slingshot around the Sun to get back.

Why do people hunt Humpback Whales? I need it for homework, sorry! It’s for a reading project and I have to write about endangered species. If you can help then, thanks!
People hunt whales for meat, oil, whalebone and ambergris, and for scientific research. Whale oil is used as a lubricant and as a component of soaps and cosmetics (and was formerly used for margarine and as fuel for lamps). Ambergris is used as a fixative in perfume production. Hope that help
How many humpback whales are left? As in, how many humpbacks remain in the wild? How many per year (estimated) are killed by whalers?
It is believed they number about 30,000-40,000 at present, or about 30-35% of the original population. Here’s the fake research site the Japanese set up: http://www.icrwhale.org/eng-index.htm This should specify how many they plan to kill.
Right now the population is being studied and there is no sufficient data. A note to Kirsty. Japan doesn’t determine how many they kill the international whaling commission (IWC) determines that. This is the same organization that set up the whaling ban in 1986. Japan hasn’t been hunting Humpbacks for a couple years until more information on there population is gathered. The IWC determines the hunt numbers by the population size, and how fast they reproduce and mature. That is why before the hunt stopped only 50 per year were allowed to be hunted. Don’t listen to the terrorist organization known as Sea shepherd they have never told the truth.
are the blue and humpback whales related to the gray whale? TELL TELL TELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Blue Whale is classified like this: Order: Cetacea Suborder: Mysticeti Family: Balaenopteridae Genus: Balaenoptera Species: B. musculus The Gray Whale is classified like this: Order: Cetacea Suborder: Mysticeti Family: Eschrichtiidae Genus: Eschrichtius Species: E. robustus So they are not very closely related, and probably diverged from a common ancestor at least 10 million years ago. The line of gray whales is one of the oldest surviving genuses. It’s akin to the relationship between a Koala and a Kangaroo. They both belong to the same family but differ greatly both genetically, behaviorly and with what niche the occupy in their ecosystem.
